How to get a jump start in Fargo without a group-chat debate
January batteries do not care about your syllabus. Here is how to ask for cables without posting your exact stall to a thousand strangers.
First, decide if this is still a neighbor job
A click-click in a public lot is a classic Help Me ask. A smell of burning, a cracked case, a car that died in a traffic lane, or anyone feeling unwell in the cold is not. Move out of traffic if you can. Call for a tow or 911 if the situation is unsafe.
Ask from the lot you are actually in
Open Help Me, choose the jump-start category, and say which public place you are at — West Acres, an NDSU lot, a downtown ramp, a Hornbacher’s vestibule. Do not drop a pin on your house. Helpers see a coarse area until you consent to more after they accept.
- Meet at the car only if the lot is public, lit, and other people can see you.
- Otherwise walk to a vestibule or entrance and walk back together.
- You provide the cables if you have them; do not assume a helper is a rolling AutoZone.
- A helper is not a mechanic. If it will not start after a clean jump, call a shop or a tow.
The cold-weather version

It is not a free tow network. It is not lockout service. It is not NDSU Police, MSUM Public Safety, or a garage. Campus public safety on some campuses will jump cars on campus — search the campus name plus jump start and use that official number when you are on their ground.

Will a helper come to my driveway?
Meet in public. You choose the label. Exact location is optional after they accept. A dark driveway is a bad default.
Does Help Me guarantee a jump?
No. Offers go to approved helpers who are online. There is no dispatch and no paid ETA. If nobody accepts in two hours, the request closes.
Can campus safety jump me instead?
Sometimes, on campus. Search NDSU Police, MSUM Public Safety, or Concordia Public Safety for their official vehicle help. Use that when you are on their campus.
